BYOK: why you should own your AI keys

Every AI product faces the same choice: resell model tokens at a markup, or let customers bring their own keys. Zapito launched BYOK-first — your agents run on your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google key, billed by the provider at cost, with 0% markup. Here’s why that’s better for you, not just simpler for us.

You see what AI actually costs

Token resellers hide unit economics inside “credits”. With your own key, the bill comes from your provider, priced exactly like every other thing you build with that provider. A support agent answering FAQs on a fast model costs a few cents per hundred conversations — you should get that at cost, not marked up 3–10×.

Your limits, your account standing

Shared-key products pool everyone behind one account: someone else’s traffic spike becomes your rate limit, and someone else’s abuse becomes your outage. With BYOK your agents run inside your own provider account, under your limits. The same philosophy runs through Zapito’s channels — your Telegram bot is your BotFather token, and your future WhatsApp number is owned by your Meta business, never pooled under ours.

No lock-in, by construction

Your key, your provider relationship, your conversation data exportable — if Zapito stops earning its keep, you leave with everything. Lock-in should come from the product being good, not from holding your infrastructure hostage.

How Zapito handles keys

Validated with a real call. Saving a key makes one tiny model call (a few tokens) on the cheapest model. That catches dead keys, keys with no billing attached, and keys pasted into the wrong provider’s field — each with a specific error message, before any customer ever messages you.
Encrypted at rest. AES-256-GCM; the encryption key lives only in the backend environment. After saving, the UI shows just the last four characters.
Routed directly. Calls go straight from Zapito’s engine to your provider with your key — no middlemen, no proxy markup. You pick the model per agent node: GPT-4o, GPT-4o Mini, Claude Sonnet, Claude Haiku, or Gemini 2.5 Flash.

A managed option (Zapito Credits) is coming for teams that don’t want to manage keys — but BYOK stays a first-class mode forever, and it will always be 0% markup.
